Store copies of sent email on your Gmail account through a desktop client.

Gmail allows you to manage your email in the Gmail Web interface, or set up your account in a desktop email client like Microsoft Outlook or Apple Mail. One reason you may prefer to use a desktop client is because this gives you the ability to use multiple SMTP servers and addresses when sending outgoing mail. You can configure your client's settings so that a copy of sent messages is saved to your Google account even if it is not sent from your Gmail SMTP address.

Instructions

  1. Microsoft Outlook

    • 1

      Launch the Microsoft Outlook application.

    • 2

Open the "Tools" menu at the top of the window and choose "Account Settings."

    • 3

Highlight your Gmail account and press the "Change" button.

    • 4

Click on the "More Settings" button in the lower right corner of the window.

    • 5

Select the radio button labeled "Choose an existing folder or create a new folder to save your sent items for this account in."

    • 6

Highlight the folder labeled "Sent Mail."

    • 7

Click "OK" twice to save the settings. Outlook now saves a copy of your sent messages in your Gmail account even when you are not using the Gmail SMTP address.

    Apple Mail

    • 8

Click on the "Mail" icon in the dock at the bottom of your Mac's screen.

    • 9

Open the "Mail" menu at the top of the screen and choose "Preferences."

    • 10

Go to the "Accounts" tab and highlight your Gmail account from the list on the left.

    • 11

Go to the "Mailbox Behaviors" section of the window.

    • 12

Check the box next to "Store sent messages on the server." Apple Mail now saves a copy of your sent messages in your Gmail account even when you are not using the Gmail SMTP address.
