How to Crochet a French Beret
An icon of French culture, the beret is a soft, rounded hat that men and women both wear. It can be easily recreated in crochet, providing you with a stylish and modern accessory. The beret is ideal for use in spring and fall and suitable for both the beginner and the more advanced crocheter.

Make the foundation with yarn and a crochet hook. Chain three, and join with a slip stitch.

Crochet the first round. Work two single crochets into each stitch. You will have a total of six single crochets.

Crochet the second round. Work two single crochets into each stitch. You will now have a total of 12 single crochets.

Crochet the third round. Repeat the following pattern around: Increase one by working two single crochets into the first stitch. Work one single crochet into the next stitch. On completion, you will have a total of 18 single crochets.

Crochet the fourth round. Repeat the following pattern around: Work two single crochets into the next stitch and one single crochet into each of the following two stitches. You will now have 24 single crochets in total.

Continue the pattern. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 until your work measures 10 inches from the beginning. Then, work even for 1 inch by working one single crochet into each stitch.

Work decrease. Continue working one single crochet into each stitch, but skip every 10th stitch on every row until your work measures the desired head size.

Finish the beret. Work two rows of one single crochet into each stitch. Fasten off the yarn, and weave in any ends using a tapestry needle.

Add optional elastic. For a more secure fit, place elastic on the inside rim of the beret, and sew in place with yarn and a tapestry needle.
