Instructions

    • 1

Prepare a test swatch of fabric before you attempt to dye the garment. Remove a piece of fabric from inside one of the seams or pocket if you do not have an additional scrap of the same type of denim fabric. Test the bleaching as well as the dyeing process.

    • 2

Prepare your bleach solution by mixing one part bleach with an equal amount of water. Dip the fabric into the bleach solution and let it soak six to eight minutes. If the color of the denim is not reduced to a very light cream color, use a more concentrated solution of more bleach and less water and leave the fabric soaking for an additional five minutes.

    • 3

Prepare a large quantity of bleach solution according to the concentration determined by your test fabric. Put the solution in the laundry tub and add the denim fabric. Keep the fabric submerged in the bleach solution for the required amount of time as determined by your test swatch.

    • 4

Wash and dry the denim before you begin the dyeing stage.Test the swatch of fabric in yellow dye from different manufacturers and select the one that yields the results you like most.

    • 5

Prepare your yellow dye according to the manufacturer's directions. Note that some dye manufacturer's recommend a hot water, boiling method while others work effectively in cold water.

    • 6

Submerge the bleached denim in the yellow dye and leave it there for the amount of time determined by your test swatch. Stir the fabric with a long-handled wooden spoon or wooden dowel to make sure there are no folded sections of the fabric that the dye cannot reach.

    • 7

Remove the fabric from the dye and wash and dry it as you would normally do.

Tips & Warnings

  • Weigh the denim garment on a scale before you begin to determine the amount of dye needed.
