Instructions

    • 1

Pin the swimsuit's seams together where you want the material bound. If you intend to sew the garment together using the serger only, make sure you use a four-thread serger. However, if you have already created the seams using a straight-stitch sewing machine and simply want to keep the material from unraveling, you may use a three-thread serger and skip the pins.

    • 2

Place the swimsuit's seam onto the serger's deck and lower the presser foot to keep the seam where you want it.

    • 3

Pull back on the swimsuit's seam as you serge the edge. Because swimsuits are made of stretchy material, they are prone to puckering if you do not pull back on the material. Only pull back as much as you can without straining the material, however, as stretching the fabric past its natural give damages the fibers.

Sew 6 inches past the seam's end, as sergers need a "tail" of thread to satisfactorily carry on sewing. Cut the tail in half, leaving 3 inches on your swimsuit and 3 inches attached to the serger. Thread your hand sewing needle with the serger's excess threads and weave them back into the swimsuit's seam to keep the serging from coming unraveled.
