How to Record a Narrative in PowerPoint

When you create a Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 slide show, the program allows you to create audio commentary, often called narration, to accompany the presentation. You can record this narration before you present the slide show, or you can record yourself and your audience during your presentation. If you don't want narration for the entire presentation, PowerPoint also lets you narrate just an audio track for individual slides.

Instructions

  1. Narrate Entire Presentation

    • 1

Open the PowerPoint 2010 presentation for which you want to record narration.

    • 2

Click on the "Slide Show" tab at the top of the screen. Locate the "Set Up" area of the ribbon and click the "Record Slide Show" button there.

    • 3

Click either "Start Recording from Beginning" or "Start Recording from Current Slide," depending on your preferred choice. Click the "Start Recording" button, which appears in a small pop-up window, to start the process.

    • 4

Speak into your computer's microphone as you go through the presentation normally. If you need to pause, click the "Pause" button in the upper left corner of the screen. Your narration will end when the slide show does, or when you right-click the screen and click "End Show."

    Narrate Single Slide

    • 5

Open the PowerPoint 2010 file that you want to work with. Click on the slide from the list of slides on the left side of the screen to which you want to add narration.

    • 6

Click on the "Insert" tab at the top of the screen and locate the "Media" area of the ribbon. Click the arrow directly under the "Audio" button and click "Record Audio" from the menu.

    • 7

Type the name of the audio commentary into the "Name" field in the small window that appears. Then click the red button to start recording.

    • 8

Speak your narration into your computer's microphone. Press the square button to stop recording. If you want to hear a playback of your narration, press the "Play" button. You can then press the red button again to rerecord your narration. Click "OK" when you're happy with your narration, and the audio will be added to the slide.
