How to Wash a Sweater

Cleaning sweaters or hand-knit items such as afghans and blankets can be very daunting. Knowing the right steps can make the process less scary.

Things You’ll Need:

• neutral soap

1. Pretreat any stains with a neutral soap. Let it sit a few minutes if it is a deep stain.
2. Soak garment in a bath of hot water.
3. Hand wash the item very gently with a neutral soap. Rinse gently with warm water.
4. Repeat cleaning process if needed.
5. Blot out excess water by pressing the item between two thick towels. Do not wring.
6. Allow the garment or blanket to air dry flat if possible. Do not hang it to dry; this can cause stretching. Drying in dryer can cause shrinkage.

Tips & Warnings

• Be very gentle in washing knits and handmade items, especially old ones. They can fall apart very easily.
