How to Troubleshoot a Magnavox DVD/VCR Receiver MRD500VR
The Philips Magnavox MRD500VR is a home theater system with a combination DVD/VCR player and AM/FM receiver. The system includes a receiver, subwoofer, four surround sound speakers and a center speaker. It features Dolby Digital and Pro-Logic sound and has 300 watts of output power. Owners can fix many of the simpler, external issues with the MRD500VR. However, due to the laser inside the unit, it is recommended that only a certified technician open the cover.

Check the connection if the unit is not powering up. Make sure the DVD/VCR receiver's power cord is completely connected to an AC outlet. Press the Standby-On button, which will turn on the unit in the same mode as it was turned off. If the power fails for more than a minute, the unit will default to VCR mode.

If the remote control fails to work, be sure that the batteries are operating properly, and that the remote is pointed at the DVD/VCR player with no obstacles. A remote must be used within 23 feet of the MRD500VR.

If a disc won't play, be sure it is a playable NTSC disc which has been loaded correctly. Clean the disc and ensure it isn't warped or scratched. If it still won't play, cancel the parental controls, enter the password or change the control level.

If there is no picture, or it is noisy or streaky, and you used an RF coaxial cable to connect the unit to the TV, make sure the TV is set to the same output channel (3 or 4) as the unit. If the picture is streaky during videocassette tape playback, adjust the tracking. Press Skip and Channel Up or Down simultaneously on the MRD500VR remote. Press Stop to return to Automatic Tracking.

If there is no sound, check the audio settings of the Magnavox DVD player. "Soundtrack" and other settings may be unavailable (such as Dolby Digital) and result in no audio. If you used audio cables, check to see if the TV is set to the correct corresponding matching Audio In channel. Make sure the speakers are connected correctly to the system.

Tips & Warnings
The MRD500VR contains an internal laser, which can cause eye injury or hazardous radiation exposure. Visible and invisible laser radiation is present when the cover is opened and interlock defeated. The beam is located inside near the deck mechanism. Only qualified technicians should remove the cover of the unit.
To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose the unit to rain or moisture.
TVs placed too closely to this Magnavox unit can cause interference during tape playback. Move the unit further from the TV if picture quality is poor.
Do not connect the unit to the VCR and then to the TV. Copyright protection systems in the VCR may distort the picture.
