How to Change Symbols to Words

You may need to convert a symbol in a word processing document, such as a Microsoft Word file, into its textual equivalent to maximize accessibility. For example, if you share a document containing a symbol with someone who does not have that symbol or font installed on her computer, she will not be able to see it. Some software automatically converts text into its equivalent symbol, such as copyright marks or smiley faces, and being able to switch the symbol back to words can be helpful.

Instructions

1. Open the document containing the symbol you want to change into a word.

2. Highlight the symbol. Press "Ctrl" and "C" to copy it to your computer's clipboard.

3. Press "Ctrl" and "H" to bring up the Find and Replace dialog box, which is available in most text editing programs, such as Microsoft Word.

4. Click inside the Find box. Press "Ctrl" and "V" to paste the symbol.

5. Type the word you want to appear in place of the symbol in the Replace box.

6. Click "Replace All." Every instance of the symbol now has your specified word in its place.
