How to Cut Off and Shorten a Shear Curtain
While shear curtains add an air of elegance to a room, buying curtains that are too long for a window can leave a room looking unbalanced. Luckily, you can shorten the length of your shear window curtains to make them the proper size for your windows. - Measuring tape or yard stick
- Scissors
- Fabric glue
- Iron
- Pins
- Sewing machine
- Thread

Measure the windows and add 12 to 16 inches to the measurement. This is how long your curtains should be.

Lay the shear curtains flat and measure to the point you want to cut them. Make a 1-inch cut in the fabric. Pull out a thread running the width of the curtains and pull it straight across. Cut along that thread line to be sure you cut the curtains off in a straight line.

Dab fabric glue on the cut end of the curtains to keep it from fraying.

Fold the bottom of the curtains over once by 4 to 5 inches and iron them flat on low heat. Fold the curtains over by another 4 to 5 inches to enclose the seam. Iron the curtains flat and pin the fabric in place.

Use an 11 or 10 needle and polyester thread. Set the tension on 3 and use a straight stitch. Sew the curtains straight across about ¼ inch from the fold.
