How to Operate a Wood Chipper

      Decide if you need a smaller model chipper that grinds branches less than 2 inches in diameter or a larger one that handles branches up to 4 inches in diameter.

      Read the directions in the operator's manual.

      Wear close-fitting clothing, long pants, sturdy boots, safety glasses and ear protection.

      Use a properly rated extension cord for an electric model.

      Place the chipper on level ground

      Make sure all guards and safety shields are in place.

      Start the chipper at the slowest speed.

      Feed branches butt first and release the wood when

      the rollers grip it.

      Use a long branch to feed shorter branches.

Tips & Warnings

  • Follow safety instructions and heed warning labels.

  • Avoid wearing jewelry or gloves with loose cuffs.

  • Never reach inside a running chipper. The chipper's moving parts can seriously injure or kill the operator.

  • Close the hood before operating a chipper.
