How to Sew a Button on a Blazer
When a button falls off your favorite blazer, there's no need to spend money having a tailor sew it back on. With a few basic hand-sewing skills, you can reattach the button yourself. Blazer buttons need a bit of room to move, as the fabric is thicker than that of a shirt. The technique for sewing on a button with wiggle room is to sew a shank. Shanks stick up slightly from the fabric, giving the button a raised base.

1
Cut off two feet of thread. Insert one end of the thread through the eye of a sewing needle, using a needle threader if necessary. Needle threaders are small pieces of bent wire that come with most sewing kits. To use one, stick the wire through the eye and insert 3 inches of the thread through the wire. Pull the wire back through the eye of the needle and slide the needle threader off the thread. Fold the thread in half and tie an overhand knot at the end. Snip off any excess thread from behind the knot.

2
Sew through the back of the blazer fabric at the spot where you want the button to be. Pull the thread taut and slide one hole of the button onto the needle and down the thread until the button hovers approximately 1/4-inch above the blazer.

3
Insert the needle through the other buttonhole and back through the fabric of the blazer. Keep the thread loose so that the button is still approximately 1/4-inch above the blazer.

4
Sew through the front of the blazer again, but do not go through a buttonhole. Instead, wrap the thread three times around the thread beneath the button, where it sticks up from the blazer, to create the shank.

5
Sew through the fabric again so that the needle is on the inside of the blazer. Insert the needle through the thread loop on the underside and tie the thread in a knot. Snip off any excess thread beyond the knot.
