How to Thread a Commercial Singer Sewing Machine 400W 31

The Singer 400W31 is an industrial sewing machine that was designed for the sewing of knits and stretchy materials for the clothing industry. The thread used in this machine is a thick, left twisted thread that enters the machine from a standing spool on the work space floor. As the machine does not hold the thread spool, threading the machine is more difficult than that of a smaller, commercial machine where the thread travels through a couple small guideposts.

Things You'll Need

• Singer 400W31 sewing machine
• Spool of thread

Instructions

1. Turn off the Singer 400W31 sewing machine.

2. Pull the thread from the floor spool and pass it through the top hole in the pin on the top of the machine and back through the second hole.

3. Pull the thread through the three holes in the thread retainer on the left side of the machine.

4. Hold the thread with your right hand and with your left hand, run the thread down through the inner slot on the back of the machine and up into the hole above the inner slot.

5. Continue to hold the thread with your right hand. Run the thread to the side of the machine through the tension discs.

6. Pull the thread through the take-up spring, under the thread pull off and through the slot. The slot follows through to the bottom of the machine just over the needle shaft.

7. Release the thread with your right hand. Run the thread through the three guideposts along the needle shaft. First, the one at the bottom of the slot, then above the needle shaft and finally through the one just above the needle.

8. Thread the needle through the front and pull the thread until three inches lies behind the sewing machine.

Tips & Warnings

• Practice threading the machine before working until you have the pattern set into your memory. If the thread breaks in the middle of working, you lose time if you have to look up the threading pattern.

• If possible, unplug the machine before working around the needle to prevent possible accidental injury.
