VoiceOver translates text to synthesized speech.

VoiceOver is an application for Apple Macintosh computers that translates text to audible speech. Users can choose from 24 unique voice presets, each with their own controls for rate, pitch, volume and intonation. The VoiceOver utility is located in the "Applications" folder on the "Macintosh HD" drive. The voice settings are adjustable in the "Speech" and "Verbosity" control panels. The "Enable positional audio" option enables text-to-speech dependent upon the position of the cursor on the screen.

      Double-click "Macintosh HD" on the desktop.

      Click "Applications" and select the "Utilities" folder to view its contents. Double-click "VoiceOver Utility" to launch the application.

      Click the "Speech" tab in the VoiceOver Utility control panel. Make sure the "Mute Speech" box is not checked. Open the "Voice" drop-down menu and select a voice from the list.

      Click the "Sound" tab and check the "Enable positional audio" box.

      Click the "General" tab and check the "Allow VoiceOver to be controlled with AppleScript" box.

      Press the "Command" and "F5" buttons simultaneously to turn on VoiceOver Speech.
