How to Refinish Steel With a Brass Finish

Things You'll Need
- Fine-grit sandpaper
- Masking tape
- Metal primer spray paint
- Metal brass finish spray paint

Place the steel object on a work surface. Sand the object lightly with a piece of fine-grit sandpaper to prepare the surface for primer.

Tape off any areas of the steel object you want to protect from paint with masking tape. Make sure the tape adheres well to the surface of the object to prevent paint from seeping under the tape.

Spray an even coat of metal primer on the surface of the object. Let the metal primer dry for at least four hours.

Apply two even coats of the brass finish spray paint to the surface of the object. Allow at least four hours between coats. Let the final coat dry for 24 hours. Remove the masking tape carefully.

Add a distressed or oil rubbed finish over the brass finish with a specialty spray paint designed to create these or other metal effects.
