How to Cut Out Images Using GIMP
To cut a shape from an image using Gimp, you can use the Rectangle or the Ellipse Selections Tools. To cut out a more complex area, use the Free Selection Tool. Before trying to cut from an image, create an Alpha Channel. This puts a level of transparency beneath the image, keeping the cut-out portion transparent. Otherwise, you will be left with a white space where the cutting had been. Remember to save the file under a different name if you want to keep the original version of your image after you have made your cuts.

1
Launch GIMP and open an image file by selecting "Open" from the "File" menu.
-
2
Click the "Layer" menu, select "Transparency," and click "Add Alpha Channel."
-
-
3
Click the "Zoom" menu at the bottom of the window, and select a zoom level that allows you to fill the window with the portion of the image you want to cut.
-
4
Select the Rectangle Select Tool from the Toolbox to cut a rectangle from the image, or the "Ellipse Select Tool" to cut out a circular shape from the image.
-
5
Draw a line around the outline freehand by selecting the "Free Select Tool," which looks like a lasso, from the Toolbox. Click on the image to activate the tool, then trace around the outline of the section you want to cut.
-
6
Press "Return" on the keyboard to set the selection in place.
-
7
Press "Ctrl-X" to cut the image. The area within the outline is cut from the picture and stored in the computer clipboard. You can paste this cutting elsewhere on the image, or into a new image or document if desired by pressing "Ctrl-V."
-
8
Save the image by clicking "Save" in the "File" menu. To save the image with a different name so you do not write over the original image, select "Save As," and type a new name into the "Name" text field.
