How to Crochet a Curve

How to Crochet a Curve thumbnail
Flower petals are an example of crochet curves.

When working on a crochet piece with corners, you will need to crochet a curve. For example, if you are crocheting a single crochet border on an afghan, you cannot just work one single crochet stitch into the edge stitches as you did on the straight sides. To do so will cause the corners to fold in. When crocheting a curve, you must increase stitches, sometimes make a chain between them, in order to keep the edges flat. This is the method used for one well-known crochet project: granny squares.

Instructions

    • 1

Crochet in the pattern stitch until you reach the stitch where you want to create the curve.

    • 2

Make two single, double or triple crochet stitch into the stitch where you want to make the curve, as called for by the pattern. For granny square corners, use a double crochet stitch.

    • 3

Chain at least one stitch. Most granny square patterns call for a three-stitch chain.

    • 4

Work two more single, double or triple crochet stitches into the same stitch.

    • 5

Create an arch by making one single crochet, one half double crochet, one double crochet, one triple crochet, one double crochet, one half double crochet and one single crochet stitch into the same stitch of the previous row. This is how to make a scallop, ruffle or flower petal. There is no need to make a chain in the middle.
