1
Choose a yarn that matches as closely as possible with the knitted yarn of the shawl, if the knitted yarn cannot be used.
-
2
Form a slipstitch in the yarn and insert the crochet hook. Determine the placement of the button loop. Insert the crochet hook into the knitted stitch, yarn over and pull the loop on the hook to form a slipstitch.
-
-
3
Chain stitch enough stitches for the button chosen for this project. Do this by placing the yarn over the hook and pulling the yarn through the loop on the hook.
-
4
Count up 2 stitches from the first stitch into the knitted shawl. Slipstitch into this knitted stitch.
-
5
Place a single crochet into each of the chain stitches, adding an extra single crochet into the center chain stitch. Do this by inserting the hook into the chain stitch, yarning over and pulling through the stitch. Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.
-
6
Join to the shawl into the first knitted stitch used. Cut the yarn off, leaving 3 inches of yarn on the shawl. Work the yarn into the back of the knitted stitches, hiding the end.
-
7
Cut a 6-inch piece of thread. Thread the hand sewing needle and tie the ends of the thread together, forming a loop. Place the end of the yarn through the loop of thread and pull through 6 inches. Sew the button onto the shawl. Cut the yarn off, leaving 3 inches remaining. Work this yarn through the back of the knitted stitches, hiding the ends.
