How to Ripen Bananas with a Grocery Bag
Bananas taste best when fully ripened. You can tell when a banana is ripe by the yellow skin with brown patches visible on the rind. You can use a paper grocery bag to expedite the ripening process. This gives you the option to purchase green bananas at the grocery store and ripen them at home. It may take several days for the bananas to ripen, depending on how green they are. 1
Place the bananas -- as many bunches as you like -- in a large paper grocery bag. Bananas produce ethylene gas, which causes them to ripen more quickly. The bag prevents the gas from escaping, so the process occurs more quickly.
-
2
Roll the top of the bag down until you feel the bananas, and keep them covered. Roll the bag as closely as possible to the bananas to minimize empty space.

3
Leave the bananas in the bag until they are ripe. Exactly how long this takes depends on how green the bananas were when you purchased them.
