How to Detect a Spoofed Mac

As Apple's popular line of Mac desktops and laptops increases in sales, some companies are taking advantage of the increased customer base by producing counterfeit devices. These spoofed Mac devices look very similar to their originals, but often lack the same hardware and software specifications. Many of these spoofed devices are sold on online resale sites. Other spoofs, such as impostor iPhones and iPods, have been seen on the market as well. It is easy to check your device against an online database maintained by Apple to ensure its authenticity.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the Apple menu on the top left corner of your screen. Click on "About This Mac" to see specific details about your system.

    • 2

Click twice on the gray text that shows your current installation of Mac OS X. Write down the serial number that is displayed.

    • 3

Visit Apple's "Service and Repair' website and enter your computer's serial number. If your computer is an authentic Apple product, your current warranty info will be displayed. If another system shows or no results are found, you may have a spoofed Mac computer.
