How Are Vaults Constructed?

  1. Materials

    • Vaults are constructed from a combination of materials and are designed with maximum strength and security in mind. Steel is used most often for the outside layer, while concrete forms the walls. The concrete contains steel rods, which reinforce the structure.
      In addition to steel walls and rods, many vaults also use an additive that is combined with the concrete. This additive seals and hardens the concrete, making it extremely resistant to being crushed or broken. This reinforced concrete is split into individual panels, which can be added or removed to customize the strength of a vault.

    Structure

    • When a vault is constructed, the concrete walls are made first. Molds in the shape of the walls are used to hold fresh concrete in place until is has set. While the concrete is still wet in the molds, steel rods are inserted into the mix. These rods will be hidden within the concrete of the finished vault. Once the concrete has set, the molds are removed.
      The door of the vault is constructed in a similar way as the other concrete panels, with several modifications. The panel of concrete used for the door is not completely solid, but features a large hole that is used for the lock. The lock that is installed into the door panel pushes strong bolts into the next panel when locked, making it extremely difficult for the door to open without the combination.

    Assembly

    • Once the reinforced concrete wall and door panels are complete, the vault is ready to be assembled. With the concrete panels in place, thick steel paneling is screwed directly onto the concrete. This steel paneling is welded together, creating a nearly seamless steel enclosure around the outside of the vault.
      Finally, a security system is typically integrated into the vault. This system connects to the door lock, allowing it to open only at certain times, and sounds an alarm if it is bypassed. Audio, motion and camera sensors are also commonly used to monitor the area, and help make modern vaults more secure than they have ever been.
