How Are Nylon Silk Tea Bags Made?

Real tea that is full flavored requires a great deal of time and effort to prepare. It was not until 1904, due to a packaging concept of a tea entrepreneur named Thomas Sullivan, that the silk tea bag was created. Nylon tea bags were developed more recently as a means of allowing a greater amount of the tea's flavor to be released into the cup.
For either silk or nylon tea bags, however, five sections of material and a drawstring hold the tea in the bag. This design was patented in 1904.
Basic Tea Bag Construction

Two rectangular pieces of silk or nylon, two square pieces and one bottom piece of the chosen material is required. The two square pieces of silk or nylon are connected between the ends of the two rectangular pieces and the bottom is then sewn on to compete the tea bag shape. Once this is complete, a drawstring is then attached to the open top of the tea bag, the tea inserted into the bag and the drawstring tied closed.

Nylon or Paper

Nylon tea bags were a manufacturing answer to the cheaply made paper tea bags that are known throughout the U.S. The problem with the paper bags has been that they only contain remnants of tea, or tea dust, and they do not provide a full flavored tea to the consumer. Consequently, a nylon bag with larger tea leaves that allowed the tea flavor of these leaves to brew in the cup would lead to a better quality tea being available on the market.
Silk

Silk tea bags started being used when a New York manufacturer decided to package his tea in a silk pouch, rather than a box. It was never his intention for consumers to use the pouch in brewing tea, but because that is what happened, the company began a new trend in making tea that changed hoe brewed tea forever. There are still many who prefer the silk tea bag and the construction of the bag is the same basic style as the nylon type.
