    Before Your Purchase

    • Before you even purchase a hearing aid, you should have your physician examine you to make sure that a hearing aid is necessary. You'll then need to decide on what type of hearing aid you want. Though there are different styles of hearing aid, your options may be limited by your hearing needs, the size and shape of your ear and your ear canal and the dexterity of your hands.

    The Fitting

    • Once you've chosen your style of hearing aid, it will be fitted to your ear or ears. While wearing the fitted hearing aids, you will be tested for word understanding in a quiet setting and in a noisy setting. You'll also be checked for how well you hear tones. The hearing aids are then set to the appropriate levels for your hearing needs. You will also practice inserting and removing the hearing aids in your ears and inserting and removing the batteries.

    Instruction and Care

    • Finally, the last part of the fitting involves being told how to care for your hearing aid and given a schedule for when your should wear it. You will also probably be given some tips on how to maximize the effectiveness of the hearing aid so that you will be able to hear as much possible.

    Wearing Hearing Aids

    • You'll want to start wearing your hearing aids in quiet situations to get used to how they affect your hearing. Then you can gradually work into wearing them in noisier situations. You may want to keep notes on any concerns or questions that may arise about sounds you hear or how the hearing aids feel.
