How Do Allergies Affect Your Pharynx?
-
Function of Allergies
-
Allergies are also known as hypersensitivity, which is an exaggerated response to foreign matters, like allergens, by our immune system. Generally, the allergens are harmless for most people but for people with a hypersensitivity, the body identifies them as a harmful substances. For example, pollens for non-allergic people will not trigger an immune response, however, for allergic people, it is completely a different story. Their body recognizes the allergen as a harmful foreign substance that must be eliminated from the system at all cost, even if it means leading to the demise of healthy cells.
How The Body Reacts To Allergies
-
A chain of reaction happens when the body comes in contact with the allergens. The first time that this happens will not necessarily be an "allergic reaction" but just the development of immunity. This means that your body has produced antibodies against the allergens. The problem begins when your body comes in contact with the allergen the second time around. The antibodies that are formed and developed will be triggered and will send signals to your immune system to produce more antibodies so that it will "fight" the foreign substance. This is now the exaggerated response begins. It is a vicious cycle in that it happens all the time unless you do something about it. Your body will not stop "fighting" until the "foreign" substance is eliminated.

How Allergies Affect Pharynx
-
Sneezing is one of the most common effects of allergies to the pharynx. Sneezing is a natural reflex when your body is trying to eliminate something that has gone through your nose and it acts as the purification system of your body where it clears up the upper respiratory system from bacteria and other foreign substances. When you have allergies, sneezing is often severe. Allergies also affect the pharyngeal area, often causing chronic post-nasal drip. Also, the sufferer may perceive a lump in her throat, though none exists. Dr. Chagnon of Scena.org says that "allergies can affect your voice by the accumulation of tenacious secretions and swelling on your vocal cords," -- in addition, this can strain your throat and damage your vocal cords.
Treatment For Allergies
-
The way to remedy a pharynx problem due to allergies is often to treat the allergies. Doctors will prescribe medication such as a decongestant or antihistamine. With the medication the body's reaction to allergens will be blocked and this should ease many of the symptoms that comes with allergies, including the inflammation and discomfort of the pharynx.
