How Drug Rehab Centers Work
-
-
Drug rehabilitation centers treat individuals wanting to break their addiction to drugs or alcohol. Just as no two people are the same, no two drug addicts or addictions are the same. Because of this, approaches to recovery vary in method. There are thousands of drug rehab centers that now focus specifically on certain types of addictions rather than treating the addiction with a general treatment plan. However, one thing remains the same: The addict must be committed and determined to achieve full recovery or sobriety.
Getting Started With Drug Rehab
-
Many addicts or alcoholics start abusing drugs or alcohol due to their wish to escape the stress and pressure in their lives. Due to this factor, drug rehab centers are not generally located in an urban environment. The setting is usually in a rural area in order to create a tranquil environment. Producing a stress-free atmosphere supports the addict or alcoholic in her goal to achieve sobriety. With the stressors and pressures temporarily removed from life, the individual is then able to concentrate on the programs offered to learn skills to cope with those stressors and pressures.

Medicinal Therapy
-
Treatment often begins with detoxification. Medication is used to ease the withdrawal symptoms and is the first step toward recovery. Once detoxification is complete, the individual begins behavioral therapy and sometimes therapy using medication specifically designed to restore brain function that is normal. Medication therapy also works to prevent a relapse and to reduce cravings for the preferred drug.
Behavioral Therapy
-
Through behavioral therapy, the individual learns about behavioral patterns and attitudes. The patient learns how to change his attitude and to adopt life skills that are healthy. Using cognitive behavioral therapy, a patient learns to recognize situations that trigger drug use. Once the patient has learned to recognize the trigger situations, she is then taught to avoid and cope with those situations without resorting to drug or alcohol use.
Multidimensional family therapy is primarily for adolescents who are addicts. By undergoing multidimensional family therapy, the adolescent and his family are working to improve the way they function as a family. This works to address what influences the pattern of drug abuse in the adolescent.
Motivational interviewing and motivational incentives use the willingness of the individual to help change behavior and offer positive reinforcement for abstaining from drugs.
Residential Treatment
-
Many drug rehab centers are outpatient facilities, but severe addictions may need long-term therapy. The residential facility uses a community approach in treating a patient. By focusing on resocialization, using the staff and anyone undergoing recovery, residential centers aid the patient in changing attitudes and behavior that is associated with the use of drugs or alcohol.
