How Do I Check the Status of a Police Report?
-
Call the Police
-
To check a police report, call your local police department at their administrative phone number. Do not call 9-1-1. You can get the phone number from the phone book or by looking on the Internet. As of 2009, all large- and medium-size police departments, and many smaller ones, have their own website.
Get Directed to the Right Person
-
Say that you want to know the status of a recent police report concerning you or the person on whose behalf you are calling. Be polite. You will probably be transferred to the correct desk or be given a phone number to dial on your own.
-
Make Your Inquiry and Arrangements
-
Once you have reached the correct person, ask about the status of the report. You can arrange to purchase a copy, which usually requires a small processing fee. Depending on your police department's rules, you might have to make the request in writing. They will work out the details with you.
