How to Test an Electric Blanket

Daniella Lauren

Electric blankets keep you warm and toasty throughout the night. Although most electric blankets should work for years, you may want to test your electric blanket after the warm season in preparation for the cold.

Prepare for the cold months so you don't wind up cold on a winter’s night because of a malfunctioning blanket.

  1. Position the electric blanket directly on the bed mattress. Place the blanket in the center of the mattress and secure with any accompanying small elastic bands that go over each corner of the mattress.

  2. Connect the plug into the wall, the plug into the blanket at the foot of the bed, and the plug at the top of the bed by the controller panel.

  3. Place a fitted sheet over the electric blanket, and make your bed as normal.

  4. Turn the electric blanket switch “On,” and set it to the middle setting.

  5. Wait for 60 to 90 minutes, then pull back the covers and check the bed for warmth. If the bed does not feel warm, check the connections of all the cords and repeat the steps. Contact the manufacturer if the unit does not work.
