How Concrete Acrylic Staining Works
-
Propertes
-
Acrylic concrete stains are made to decorate smooth concrete surfaces. They are especially designed to soak into the permeable concrete and act as a dye that leaves a slightly transparent coloring on the surface of the concrete. Since concrete is usually exposed to the elements--at least in outdoor scenarios--the acrylic paint is designed to color the concrete slightly below the surface so that the paint cannot wear or chip off. Both professional contractors and innovative painters use acrylic stain.
Given its widespread usefulness, acrylic concrete stain can be used on almost every type of concrete construction, including patios, driveways, walkways, retaining walls, and other landscaping formations. Indoors, the acrylic paint can be applied to garage floors, basement floors and any sort of decorative concrete used for floors or walls. Since the paint is also designed to resist ultraviolet rays, heat and friction from tires and footsteps, and acidic substances that can leak into the concrete from rainwater, it also tends to be durable.
Procedures and Alternatives
-
As a concrete paint, acrylic stain is very flexible. Colors can be mixed to attain different effects and applied in layers to achieve various artistic looks. A number of different tools can be used to apply the paint, from normal brushes to various sponges that can be used to apply interesting patterns to the concrete. When working with acrylic concrete stain at home, the primary problem is applying the stain to concrete that is too smooth, not a problem people generally expect to have in an application like this. Concrete that already has a finish on it, or that is too brushed and carefully compacted, will not be able to hold the stain properly.
The other alternative when painting concrete is acid stain, which reacts with the surface of the concrete to form a certain type of concrete stain, influenced by mineral salts that are a part of the solution. This method produces a long-lasting color effect as well, but must be applied when the concrete is brand-new so that there is enough lime to react with and neutralize the acid. People sometimes prefer acrylic concrete stains because they offer a wider variety of colors and more flexibility when it comes to color combination.

Prep Work
-
Before concrete is stained using acrylic products it must be carefully treated, which usually involves dusting and washing followed by a thorough cleaning with a power washer. Afterward, water can be sprayed on the concrete and observed: If the water beads instead of soaking through, the concrete will not yet hold the stain.
