About WiFi Hotspots
-
WiFi hotspots refer to public locations, such as libraries, hotels, restaurants or coffee shops that offer free wireless Internet connection to its customers. The hotspot's server is already connected to the Internet and has a wireless router installed as well. The wireless router allows the users to connect to the network and access the Internet for free. Keep in mind that this is a public connection open to anyone, which might compromise your computer security.
Hotspot Access

Once you have located a WiFi hotspot location, you will need an access code to join the local network. Hotels usually give this information to the guests at no charge, while restaurants or coffee shops might require a minimum purchase to be made first. Some places also require filling out a short survey or a questionnaire before the access is granted. Other hotspots require you to install a free toolbar on your computer for advertisement purposes before access. Keep in mind that the service is available to all customers, which means that depending on the number of users your access can be time restricted anywhere from a half hour to several hours.
How to Connect
-
Before you visit a free WiFi hotspot you need to make sure that your computer is set up for this service. Most of the new laptops come with a built-in wireless networking card necessary for connection, while you would have to purchase one separately if you don't have an internal one.
Open your laptop, go to the "Start" menu, and click the "Connect To" option to find the name of the WiFi hotspot network in the list of available wireless networks. Double-click on the connection, enter the access passcode if prompted and open your browser for surfing. Alternatively, some hotspots allow you to connect without entering an access code, but you would have to enter it once you open your browser.
