  1. What is a Thyroid Cyst?

    • The thyroid gland is one of the largest parts of the endocrine system, which governs the flow and release of hormones in the body. This particular gland resembles a pair of wings which sit on either side of the throat, just below the Adam's apple. Its job is to produce thyroxine and triiodothyronine, which help regulate metabolism. A thyroid cyst is a growth or lump in the thyroid gland which can exceed one inch in diameter.

    Simple Cyst Causes

    • Simple cysts are one of two types of thyroid cysts. They are filled with nothing but fluid and are often non-cancerous. There are a number of possible reasons for one to form. The least dangerous of simple cysts is caused by a simple obstruction in the flow of fluid through the thyroid gland. This may be the result of an anatomical abnormality from birth, or a natural function of aging. Inflammatory diseases may cause simple cysts as a secondary symptom. Likewise, infections can form a pustule that inhibits the flow of fluid.

    Complex Cyst Causes

    • Complex cysts look identical to simple cysts, but they contain a combination of fluid and solid material. This is often not found until a CT scan or a biopsy of the cyst tissue is performed. They are typically more dangerous and often require surgical removal. They may be caused by benign tumors or malignant thyroid cancer. In some cases, a complex cyst is formed as a result of radiation treatment during the patient's formative years. These are typically growths of mutated cells.
