    Broken Facial Capillaries

  1. When a facial capillary breaks, it can result in red or blue lines. Frequently shaped like a strands of a spider web, broken facial capillaries are often referred to as spider veins. While not harmful to your health in any way, they are unsightly for those who experience them. Broken facial capillaries can be eliminated through specialized laser treatments. You can also minimize the number of broken facial capillaries that occur by understanding the root causes and taking steps to avoid capillary damage.
  2. External Causes

  3. A myriad of factors can contribute to broken facial capillaries. Dry and sensitive skin tends to be thinner and more fragile than normal skin types. Genetic factors can also increase the possibility of a broken capillary as can activities that are abrasive to the skin. These include washing with harsh cleansers, using heavy cosmetics, subjugating the skin to extreme heat or cold, and facial massage.
  4. Internal Causes

  5. Interactions within the body can also break capillaries. For example, hormonal changes that result from pregnancy, puberty, menopause and birth control pills cause strain on capillaries. Frequent ingestion of stimulants such as caffeine, spicy foods, certain drugs and alcohol are also risks. Rosacea, a skin condition that causes facial capillary dilation, is another common cause.
