Some doctors claim that food does not cause acne and that acne is hereditary. Other doctors claim that it has to do with hormonal imbalances. Although there are no scientific studies that conclusively state that certain foods cause acne, there is evidence that suggests that there is a link between diet and acne. Also, there is evidence to show that acne is caused by other factors within the body and these other factors can be influenced by diet and certain foods. Thus, it appears there is an indirect link between food and acne.

What causes acne in one person may not result in acne another. However, if acne is present then eliminating foods that are known to be possible causes of acne are worth a try.
It is thought that some foods increase hormone levels in the bloodstream, causing the production of more oil or sebum in the skin, leading to the clogging of pores, which ultimately leads to acne. Also certain foods have high levels of toxins which strain the liver. The liver is unable to get rid of these toxins, so the toxins are released through the skin, resulting in acne. Some food create an allergic or a toxic reaction and causes an inflammation or hives to appear on the skin.

Caffeine can increase hormone production, so colas, tea, coffee and chocolate are possible acne producers.
Refined sugars and carbohydrates can also increase hormonal levels, so white breads, and pastas could be acne producers.
Red meat and dairy products can be difficult to digest. Food is not eliminated as quickly, causing the waste products to be released through the skin, resulting in acne.
Alcohol increases the testosterone hormone, leading to acne.
Processed foods contain toxins, overloading the liver, resulting in acne.
Other possible culprits include nuts, fats, spicy foods, ready meals, rice, candy, eggs, corn, blueberry, cranberry and pineapple.
