Animals & Plants Have External Needs Required for Life
Animals and plants have similar external needs that must be provided to sustain life. Some obvious things that both animals and plants need on a consistent basis for basic survival are air, water, and nutrients. Both animals and plants have adaptive abilities that may allow them to survive in less than optimal conditions. However, most animals and plants have unique attributes that allow them to thrive within certain conditions or within a specific environment. Therefore, both animals and plants have unique individual needs for temperature range, moisture level, and amount of sunlight to thrive and reproduce.
Animals & Plants Reproduce
Animals and plants reproduce offspring that are genetically similar to themselves to continue the survival of their individual species. Genetic mutations may occur during reproduction to any plant or animal. These mutations may cause minor changes in DNA. Mutations may improve the survival of the species and be passed on to future offspring. However, occasionally a mutation such as a defective or missing chromosome can cause defective offspring that may result in premature death.
Animals & Plants Provide for Humans
Certain species of animals and plants provide food for animal and human consumption. Both plants and animals can provide the protein necessary for building strong bodies, bones, and teeth. There are also species of plants and animals that provide clothing, bedding, medicine, housing, and beauty for people to enjoy. Farmers raise the majority of these plants and animals on specialty farm to meet world demands. However, families may raise small quantities at their homes for personal enjoyment. Both plants and animals may be raised organically or commercially.
Animals and Plants Are Composed of Similar Cells
All living things are composed of cells. Plant and animal cells have many similarities. The cells of both plants and animals consist of similar organelles including a nucleus, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus. To function according to its purpose each cell, whether plant or animal, has a control center called a nucleus. Ribosomes are also present in animal and plant cells to assist in manufacturing of proteins necessary for cell life. Two types of endoplasmic reticulum exists within each cell. One assist in the transporting proteins out of the cell, the other detoxifies materials poisonous to the cell. The fourth organelle common to plant and animal cells is the Golgi apparatus. It exists in the cytoplasm of animal and plant cells to process and transport proteins within the cell.
