Process for Electrolysis Hair Removal

  1. A Needle into the Pore

    • During the electrolysis process, a very thin metal needle is inserted into the same pore that houses the unwanted hair follicle. The electrologist inserts the needle in the same direction that the hair is growing and activates the machine, sending a tiny current directly into the pore and destroying the cell that causes hair growth. Electrolysis usually requires several sessions in order for the hair removal to be permanent, as hair cells are always rejuvenating themselves and are not always killed the first time around. The process is also extremely time-consuming, requiring anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes per area of hair.

    Conduction Fluid

    • Conduction fluid is used on the treatment site to make the tiny electrical current flow easier through the skin and into the hair follicle. Salt water can be used for this process, or a type of clear jelly. This is done while using electric tweezers as well as an electric current. If there is insufficient conduction fluid on the site, the electricity will not damage the root of the hair as intended. Some hair requires more work than others, so if the hair doesn't pull out of the pore easily after treatment, the process must be repeated.

    Skin Cream

    • Electrolysis is followed by the application of a skin cream that soothes the minor irritations caused by the electric current. Sometimes scabbing may occur, especially if the skin isn't cleaned properly before treatment begins--which can result in infections forming inside the pores. The insertion of the needle and the application of electricity are irritating to the skin, so skin cream is recommended for treating the skin afterward to reduce swelling and scarring. Electrolysis should only be done on small areas such as the upper lip, chin or cheeks. It's not recommended to try it on larger areas because it's very time-consuming, and the hair has to be treated one follicle at a time.
