Foods That Cause Yeast Infections

Yeast infections are uncomfortable and sometimes painful. Candida, the fungus that causes yeast infections, naturally occurs in our body. Candidiasis, the medical term for yeast infections, usually occurs when there is a change in the environment of the body allowing the yeast to grow more rapidly. Yeast infections can occur in your mouth, or in the vaginal/genital area, or throughout your body. Yeast infections can usually be treated successfully by over the counter creams, suppositories or a prescription from your doctor. Certain foods are more likely to cause yeast infections than others. Following the below diet guidelines can reduce your incidence of getting a yeast infection.

Types

The symptoms of vaginal candidiasis are redness, burning, swelling and itching of the vulva and vaginal area, which will get worse if not treated. There is usually a thick, white discharge accompanied by a foul smell in advanced yeast infections. You may have one or more of the above symptoms in varying degrees from mild to intense.Thrush or candidiasis of the mouth is also caused by the overgrowth of yeast in the mouth or digestive tract. Symptoms are white patches on the tongue or in the mouth. The corners of the mouth can be cracked and there can be pain and difficulty swallowing.

Candida is naturally occurring in the body but when it gets out of control it is sometimes due to the foods you eat. A high sugar diet sometimes is passed out through the body in your urine and vaginal secretions altering the environment in the vagina. The yeast fungus feeds and multiplies in a sugary environment and a diet high in sweet sugary foods, including fructose, can cause yeast to grow.

Foods

Highly refined foods that are full of sugar, like donuts, candy, cookies, sugar in your coffee, cakes and chocolates should be limited or avoided. Sugary soda and fruit juices will also raise the sugar in your blood stream. Also watch out for fruits that are high in fructose sugar as well such as, cherries, grapes, bananas, dried fruits, raisins, tangerines, mangoes, prunes and pomegranates. Highly refined carbohydrates like white bread, pasta, white bagels and flour tortillas can also increase the sugar in the blood stream and should be eaten in moderation.

Acidophilus and yogurt contain a good bacterium called lactobacilli, which balances the yeast and should be included in your diet. Drinking acidophilus and eating yogurt everyday is a good idea. Sometimes store bought yogurt is very high in sugar, be sure to avoid it. Making your own homemade yogurt with a yogurt machine can be fun and also let you control how much sugar is in your yogurt. Acidophilus pills are also available in capsule form.

Solution

Drinking plenty of water will help dilute the sugar in your blood stream before you urinate it out. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.

Remember to consult with your doctor before changing your diet.
