It is possible to become nauseous from consuming saccharin. According to Medicine.net, saccharin contains sulfa compounds and those who are allergic to sulfa drugs may not tolerate saccharin.
"Reactions can include headaches, breathing difficulties, skin eruptions and diarrhea," states Medicine.net.
People who are unable to tolerate saccharin can use plant-based or other sweeteners. -
If you discover that you do not tolerate saccharin either in a hot tea or coffee or in prepared foods, use stevia root. Stevia root is derived from the stevia plant (stevia raudbiana)) and is many times sweeter than cane sugar.
Stevia root is available in packets to use in hot drinks and also in larger containers and can be used in place of saccharin or cane sugar.
Stevia is appropriate for diabetics. -
For baking and cooking, you can use frozen apple, orange or pineapple juice concentrate that has been thawed. Use three tablespoons of fruit juice in place of every 1/4 cup of cane sugar. To replace saccharin in a hot beverage, use 1/2 tsp. of fruit juice.
Also consider agave, barley malt, molasses, honey, maple syrup or brown rice syrup as alternatives to saccharin. These are found in health food stores.
You may need to experiment further as every individual has a different preference for how sweet she would like her food to be.
