Does DNA play a part in whether or not someone is an alcoholic? According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, individuals who have alcoholic parents are four to eight times more likely to become alcoholics themselves. However, is behavior ingrained in our DNA, or more a case of monkey see, monkey do? While debate still surrounds the issue, the general belief is that both genetics and environmental factors contribute to alcoholism.

The Research

A variety of studies indicates that genetics contributes to alcoholism. For example, Dr. Robert Philibert, director of the Laboratory of Psychiatric Genetics at the University of Iowa, has found that inherited genetic makeup can claim 40 percent to 50 percent of the responsibility for the risk of someone becoming alcoholic.

Scientists hypothesize that specific genes may dictate an individual's tolerance for alcohol, as well as level of cravings for alcohol. Generally, individuals who have a high tolerance for alcohol tend to abuse it more readily. Naturally, those who crave alcohol are also more likely to overindulge.

Potential

Though the exact genes that contribute to alcoholism have yet to be identified, research has pinpointed certain chromosomes that routinely pop up in individuals who have addictive personalities. For example, Dr. Kenneth Blum is attributed with first identifying the dopamine D2 receptor gene as a possible contributor to alcoholism. However, other genes are likely involved as well.
