How Does a Binding Machine Work?

  1. The General Concept

    • Most binding machines are built with two functions: a part on the bottom cuts holes in the paper, and a part on top binds the paper into a wire, coil or plastic binding comb. Comb, wire and coil binding are the most common types of machines used in offices, copy shops and homes.

    Comb

    • When you use a comb binding machine, die cutting points punch rectangular holes into the left hand side of the booklet. Then the user places a flexible plastic comb, which will hold the booklet together, into pointed stakes that stick up from the top of the machine. The comb is opened by pulling down the same lever that was used to punch the holes. The perforations in the booklet are lined up with the combs and the lever is pushed back to enclose the comb around the pages.

    Wire

    • The wire binding process is very similar to that of the plastic comb binding machine, except that the wire is not flexible. The wire is inserted into the rectangular perforation marks, then the booklet (with wire) must be inserted, with the perforated side pointed down toward the floor, inside of a slot in the top back of the machine. A manual (lever pulled by you) or electric operation shuts the wire closed to bind the booklet.

    Coil

    • A coil binding machine allows you to perforate your document the same as you would with a comb or wire machine. But the binding process is much different. Once circular holes are made, an apparatus allows you to wind a springy coil through the perforations to bind the booklet. The user inserts about four coils manually and then the machine takes care of the rest. Some manual machines require you to do all of the coiling.

Finally, a handheld crimper seals the pliable coil at each end so that it doesn't spin out of the holes again. This machine can be a little tricky to get the hang of, but the result is very clean and attractive.
