The Basics

"Chest pressure" is described as the feeling or sensation one gets when they start to experience periods of pain or discomfort centered in their chest area. Chest pressure in and of itself is not a disorder, but oftentimes is a warning sign for other potentially serious conditions. One common cause for chest pressure is being a smoker. The constant influx of cigarette smoke into your lungs can lead to chest pressure for prolonged periods of time.

Experiencing chest pressure for extended periods of time is a standard warning sign of a heart attack. Chest pressure can also be the first symptom you experience during an actual heart attack or stroke. An anxiety attack (also referred to as a panic attack) can also cause you to experience discomfort in your chest. These are two symptoms that act as prime examples why chest pain should never be taken lightly and medical help should be sought as soon as possible.

General Health

There are a number of general health-related causes that could lead to a person experiencing chest pressure. These include but are in no way limited to things like high blood pressure and high cholesterol. People who have diabetes are also prone to experiencing chest pressure due to problems with their circulatory system. A number of these things can be kept under control simply by eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly.
