Like all consumer products, the manufacturing process for mobile phones begins with a design vision. Manufacturers usually employ teams of designers to analyze the mobile phone styles that are most popular with consumers, brainstorm ways to improve on the designs of previous mobile phone models and make sure the finished phone can be manufactured at a reasonable price for profit. Once the aesthetics are decided upon, designers then work on the features they would like to include in a particular phone. The addition of touch screens, keyboards, memory card slots or any other feature must fit with the overall design aesthetic.

After a phone's design is finalized, the next stage in the manufacturing process is to identify all the necessary hardware components used to create the phone. The manufacturer must consider what transistors, processors, screen materials, buttons, cases and other pieces should be included in the phone. Often, common components may be purchased from third parties, but some parts may need to be custom made to fit the phone's design. All these decisions are made with a mind toward cost, innovation and quality. Once the components are decided upon, an automated assembly line is set up to put them all together.

Testing and Release

Finished phones must pass a rigorous testing process before they are placed on the market. Every feature of the phone must be proven to work properly, and the performance of the phone's call quality, battery life and other functions must be rated. Once this phase is passed, the phones are sent for packaging and release.
