What Do Inspectors Use to Test Levels of Asbestos?
-
Inspection
-
An inspector tests for asbestos using a step-by-step procedure. First, an inspector will the enter the building or structure where the presence of asbestos is expected. The inspector will then look at all the materials used in the buildings construction.
If an inspector detects a piece of material he expects may contain asbestos, he will take a sample of that material. This is done by first wetting the material with a mist of water containing detergent. The sample must then be carefully cut with care and should be as small as possible. The inspector will use a microscope to inspect the piece of material to see if he detects the presence of asbestos. If the presence of asbestos is detected or further suspected, the inspector will carefully bag up the material and send it to the proper testing facility. The inspector will then write a written report of the findings. The results will generally take one to two weeks to come back from the testing facility.
How to Fix an Asbestos Issue
-
If asbestos is detected and verified by lab results, it will need to be removed or covered with another material. In most cases, the asbestos can simply be covered up by a qualified repairman and no further action is required. However, if the area with asbestos is heavily damaged it will need to be removed. Refrain from removing the asbestos on your own and hire a professional.
