Becoming a Nonprofit

A nonprofit is defined as an organization with a tax exempt 501(c)3 designation, indicating that it is not a profit-making organization. To become a nonprofit, organizations must apply for this status. Most charities or service organizations, including churches, are nonprofits.

Working in a Nonprofit

Like any organization, each nonprofit is different. Some provide health, education or counseling services, while others provide free meals or transportation for those in need of support. Nonprofits operate all over the world, usually with a focused mission, a governing board and anywhere from one to thousands of staff.

Surviving as a Nonprofit

Non profits are reliant often on a set revenue stream, grants or donations to pay for their operation or services. This leaves nonprofits often fundraising or dependent on donors in order to run their daily business, which they rarely charge for or do so at very reduced rates.
