How Much Hardwood Flooring Can Be Installed in a Day?

  1. Prep Work

    • Plan on 1-3 days of prep work before installing your hardwood flooring. First the subflooring must be installed. Typically, this is a layer of plywood flooring material and a layer of ash paper. The paper is tacked down to the plywood subfloor. In addition, molding must be removed, and the subflooring must be checked for cracks, recesses and weak spots. After this is completed, the floor can be installed.

    Normal Installation

    • Hardwood flooring with a simple tongue-and-groove design is easily installed once the prep work is done. The boards are laid flush to the wall and tacked in with a pneumatic hammer. Using this tool, anywhere from 100 to 200 square feet of hardwood flooring can be installed in one afternoon. If you work from morning until night, you can complete a much larger room, up to 500 square feet or more.

    Tools and Skills

    • The tools you have at your disposal as well as your own woodworking skills can speed up the process. The pneumatic hammer is a must to make the hardwood flooring go fast. Using a hammer and nails, you can expect to install about 100 square feet of flooring in an afternoon. A miter saw with a sharp blade will also make the job go faster. This tool allows you to cut the planks to size at a perfect 90-degree angle. Without a tool like this, the job could take several hours more, because planks would need to be cut by hand.
