How Does Conjugated Linoleic Acid Work?

    • Multiple studies have revealed conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is effective in reducing fat storage in non-diabetic patients. It was also effective in delaying the onset of Type II diabetes in rats modified to have diabetes, while reducing their adipose tissue storage by up to 50%. Even when CLA was discontinued, the reduction in adipose storage remained lower than pre-CLA retention. CLA also appears to lower leptin plasma levels. Leptin is the hormone responsible for regulating feelings of hunger and satiety.

    How CLA Works

    • CLA appears to work on leptin to reduce the levels released into the body. Lower leptin levels are associated with not feeling hungry. Your body is getting and retaining the "I'm full" message for a longer period of time. CLA disrupts levels of lipoprotein lipase, making you burn fat faster while storing less fat. It also lowers insulin resistance, making the insulin your pancreas produces more productive. It takes less insulin to counter rising glucose levels, which can keep weight in check. CLA also builds lean muscle mass and increases the metabolic rate.

    Where To Obtain CLA

    • CLA occurs naturally in lamb, beef and dairy products. It is also available as a dietary supplement. You can buy it in a liquid oil formula, which can be added to any food that isn't heated above 140 degrees. Too much heat can destroy the beneficial properties of CLA and trigger fat oxidation, which turns to free radicals. CLA also comes in soft gel capsules. A typical dose is 1,000 to 3,000 mg daily. Consult with a physician before taking CLA if you are pregnant, have high blood pressure or take medications to thin your blood.
