How You Get Roundworm

  1. Classification

    • Roundworms, or "nematodes," are a diverse class of animal from the pseudocoelomates that number 80,000 species with 15,000 known to be parasitic. The creature differs from flatworms or cnidarians as they possess a digestive system at either end. Roundworms thrive in any environment, whether marine or fresh water to polar or tropical climates, regardless of altitude elevation. This species tends to outnumber any animal in individual or species count no matter the terrain. Roundworms reproduce sexually, meaning a male and female copulate to procreate the species.

    Contraction

    • A person gets roundworms by ingestion of contaminated food or contact with soil that contains the creature or its eggs. Dirty hands also play a role as contact to the mouth creates an eventual roundworm infection. Fecal matter carry the eggs as well then contaminate the environment where people live, work and or play each day. Infected pets may spread the disease to their human owners through contact or their droppings. Roundworms also enter into the body through mucus membranes such as the eyes from contamination.

    Symptoms

    • The infection causes a series of ailments whenever someone contracts roundworms from any contaminated source. Fever similar to the flu occurs as a drop or increase in body temperature once the roundworms spread throughout. Other exhibits are abdominal pain, gas, diarrhea, larvae in stool and/or vomiting. Blurred vision may result once the roundworms migrate to the eyes and eventually cause blindness if left untreated. Prescription medication from a doctor stops the roundworms from feeding or paralyzes them.
