Bridal Waltz Dance Steps

  1. The Waltz

    • The waltz is commonly known as the grandfather of all couples dances and is traditionally the bride and groom's first dance at the reception. The dance is a symbol of status, culture and sophistication that is characterized by steps that create long flowing movements. In learning how to perform the bridal waltz, the first and most important thing is to choose the music. Once the music is chosen, the bride and groom are ready to begin practicing. In a waltz, the man leads while the woman follows. Both the man and the woman will need to learn three essential steps and the man and the woman need to step at the same time.

    Man's and Woman's Steps

    • The man should step forward with his left foot the approximate distance of two footsteps, which is the distance of all the steps. The next step the man makes is to move the right foot forward and to the right side. Then the left foot goes to the side, so now both the right and left foot are together. Then the right foot goes backward and then the left foot goes back and to the left side, and once again the right foot should follow to end up next to the left foot. Essentially, the moves are front, side, together, back, side, and together. These are the six steps for the man to learn. The moves continually repeat themselves. On the woman's side, all the steps should mirror what the man's step is so that they are in rhythm together. Each step should be fluid, graceful and look elegant.

    Arm and Hand Placement

    • "This dance is performed in closed position, meaning the partners face each other, together in full body contact with her left arm on his upper left arm, his right arm on her left shoulder blade, and him holding her right hand in his left," explains Alice Langholt in "How to Waltz." The couple moves around the dance floorr counterclockwise.
