    What is the Prostate?

  1. The prostate is a gland that is a little bigger than a walnut. It is situated in front of the rectum, just under the bladder. It encases the urethra, which is responsible for carrying urine and semen from the male's outer reproductive organ. The prostate gland plays a significant role in the male reproductive system and sexual function.
  2. The Importance of the Prostate

  3. The prostate produces 70% of the male's semen. The semen is an organic fluid that accompanies the sperm during ejaculation and neutralizes acids in the vaginal tract, helping the sperm to survive longer. The prostate is also responsible for thrusting the sperm out of the penis during ejaculation. Its smooth muscle tissues allow the sperm and the semen to flow out of the body through the penis.
  4. The Role of Androgens in the Prostate

  5. The prostate works with the help of androgens. Androgens are male hormones which act as paracrine hormones. They support the production of the sperm and help keep the prostate gland working properly by regulating its functions. Androgens also help to ward off cancer-causing agents by activating certain intracellular receptors. Overall, androgens play a significant role in the growth, maintenance and development of the prostate.
  6. How the Prostate Works

  7. Male hormones, also known as androgens, cause the prostate to work. As the most essential of the male hormones, testosterone secretes into the male body, equipping and enabling the prostate to function properly. The prostate is often called to action during sexual intercourse. During this time, the prostate is induced to secrete the milky, slightly alkaline fluid that it stores. This fluid contains the semen, seminal vesicle fluid and the spermatozoa.

At the height of the sexual arousal, this fluid along with all of its components, flows toward the center of the prostate gland by means of the vas deferens. Upon reaching the center of the prostate, nourishment is provided to the sperm through the seminal vesicles. The powerful muscles in the prostate then deliver the sperm during ejaculation.
