Why Is Cocoa Powder Poisonous to Dogs?

Both caffeine and theobromine are found in the cocoa plant and thus in cocoa powder. These substances are toxic to dogs, and at higher levels, depending on the weight of the dog, they can be lethal. Theobromine and caffeine work as stimulants in dogs, just as they do in humans. Humans, however, can clear theobromine rapidly from their system, while it can take a dog upwards of three days to expel the chemical. Because the caffeine and theobromine stay in the bloodstream for so much longer in dogs, they have more time to trigger toxic effects.

What Does It Do to Dogs?

Symptoms usually occur within 24 hours of ingesting cocoa powder. Eating cocoa powder can induce vomiting, heavy panting, diarrhea, bloating, dehydration, fever, seizures and muscle tremors.

Active Components

Instant cocoa powder holds approximately 150 mg of theobromine and caffeine per ounce. Dry coca powder contains much more. Though some dogs have a higher tolerance for theobromine and caffeine than other dogs, it is still toxic to them.
