    Dosage

  1. Most nutritionists educated about extra virgin coconut oil recommend about 3 to 4 tbsp. of coconut oil daily. This amount is based upon the amount of lauric acid contained in the coconut oil, as well as the amount of medium-chained fatty acids. Make sure the oil you are using is not the refined and bleached oil but rather labeled as extra virgin coconut oil. It does not need to refrigerated but has to stay out of the sunlight and can be used for cooking since it is not changed by cooking heat like most oils are.
  2. Introduction Time

  3. When you start taking coconut oil and incorporating it into your diet, you will want to do so slowly over a few days so you don't get any reactions, such as intestinal discomfort. Most doctors would recommend that you spread the daily amount over the three meals of your day instead of taking just one dose in the morning or evening. Maybe start on the first day with just a half a teaspoon for breakfast and add a half a teaspoon to lunch the following day and on the third day another half teaspoon for dinner. Increase the dosage each day by half a teaspoon until you get to the recommended 3 tbsp.
  4. Preparation

  5. There are some individuals who don't mind jugging down a tablespoon of oil, but for the others who might find this difficult and even nauseating, there are ways of preparing it so that it is part of your meal. For instance, spread a tablespoon of the oil on some whole grain toast and drizzle with honey and sprinkle with cinnamon. For lunch, make your salad dressing with coconut oil, vinegar and herbs, and for dinner, add a drizzle of coconut oil over your pasta just as you might use extra virgin olive oil. You will quickly find that it is very easy to add the extra virgin coconut oil to many dishes and foods.
