How Does the Lottery System Work for Super Bowl Tickets?
-
Availability
-
Football fans have been known to go to great lengths to attend the Super Bowl. Though some fans purchase tickets at high prices from scalpers or ticket agencies, some tickets are actually sold to the public officially, at face value. Every year the National Football League sells a small number of Super Bowl tickets to fans chosen through a random lottery system. The system gives any participant the chance to purchase a pair of Super Bowl tickets.
Process
-
Participants looking to enter into the random drawing must first send a letter requesting a pair of Super Bowl tickets to: Super Bowl Random Drawing, P.O. Box 49140, Strongsville, OH 44149-0140. The letter must contain the participant's name, address and contact information. Additionally, the request must be sent via certified mail and should be typed. Participants may only send one request per household, as duplicate requests are discarded. There is no fee to enter the drawing.
-
Time Frame
-
The NFL accepts requests between February 1st and June 1st of the year preceding the game; over the summer, the NFL sends letters of acknowledgement to those who have entered the drawing. In October, all requests are entered into a random drawing. The winners are notified in late October and receive a chance to purchase a pair of Super Bowl tickets. The odds of being selected in the drawing are dependent on the total number of participants. Additionally, the number of tickets made available for the lottery fluctuates from year to year, dependent on the stadium the game is played in as well as any decisions the NFL makes regarding ticket allotment.
Team Policy
-
In addition to the NFL's official lottery, the teams participating in the Super Bowl often distribute tickets to their fans via random drawing. Generally, once a team has won its Conference Championship game, team officials hold a random drawing to determine which fans can purchase tickets. Only full-season ticket holders and fans with club seats or suites are eligible for the drawing. Those chosen in the drawing have the ability to purchase a pair of tickets. Some teams use a weighted lottery system, giving more entries to fans who have purchased numerous full-season tickets over the years, though every team uses its own method.
