How Do Web Pages Get Onto the Internet?

Creating a Web Page Online

There are many web based design and hosting companies that provide both the place for your site to occupy, as well as the tools with which to build the site. Google Web Hosting is certainly one of the better known companies providing this service, and anyone can create web pages that are hosted for free.
For those who wish a more professional web presence, web hosting can be secured ranging from a cost of a few dollars per month on up. Many of these hosting companies provide the necessary tools for anyone with a moderate familiarity of computing skills to build a web site.
In both cases, the construction process is reasonably straightforward. The first step is to choose a template. The template will provide the "look and feel" of the site, typically choosing the color, theme and menuing system. While some templates allow for customization, the amount of customization varies from one company to the next.
Creating a Web Page Locally and Uploading It

Many of the office or word processing packages available today will allow for web pages (technically known as HTML for Hyper Text Markup Language) to be created and then saved right from the program, with varying degrees of success. Microsoft Word and Open Office Writer are two such programs that provide this feature.
Once a web page has been created and saved in HTML format, the next step is to "upload" it to a place on the Internet where the page can be reached by anyone looking for it. The term "upload" is exactly what you might think, it is the process of transferring the file from a local computer to somewhere on the Internet. The two most common methods of uploading a file are using what is known as an FTP (File Transfer Program) which will allow you to securely connect to a hosting platform, or in many cases the process is simplified to where a user will log onto their site, click on a Browse button, locate the file on their computer and select the Upload button to initiate the file transfer. -
